The New World Movie Story - Synopsis. Inspired by the Pocahontas legend. The New World is an adventure set during the founding of a settlement in 1607. At that time, North America is much as it has been for the previous centuries a land of wilderness populated by tribal cultures. Although these nations live in perfect harmony with their environment, their relations with each other are not so good. in April of 1607, three ships bearing 103 men sail into the new world from England, three thousand miles to the east across the atlantic. On behalf of their sponsor, the Virginia Company, they are seeking to establish a foothold on the coast of what they regard as the New World. The lead ship of the flotilla is called the Susan Constant with in her brig a man named John Smith, destined to be hanged for insubordination as soon as the ship anchors. A veteran of countless European wars, Smith is a soldier of fortune. The English struggle from the beginning in this strange land, unable to fend for themselves. John Smith, searching for help from the local tribesmen, chances upon a young woman who at first seems to be more woodland sprite than human. A willful woman whose family call her Pocahontas or playful one. she is the most loved of Powhatan’s children. A relationship develops between Smith and Pocahontas (Kilcher), a bond so strong that it transcends friendship or even romance, and eventually becomes the basis of a famous legend.
